The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Sydney, Blue Mountains & the Reef.

Start in Sydney with the Opera House, a BridgeClimb, the Manly ferry and the Bondi to Coogee clifftop walk. Take the train two hours west to Katoomba for the Three Sisters, the rides at Scenic World and the Grand Canyon Track near Blackheath. Fly north to Cairns for a reef day at Green Island or the outer reef, plus the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail. Finish in Port Douglas with a Quicksilver trip to Agincourt Reef and a walk in Mossman Gorge in the Daintree rainforest.

Good for First-time visitors who want Sydney, mountain hikes and the reef in one trip.

When to go

May to October is the dry season in tropical Queensland, with calm seas and no box jellyfish risk, while Sydney is cool and clear. From November to May, Cairns is hot and humid with stinger season, so swim in stinger suits or at netted beaches.

Getting around

Sydney's trains and ferries cover the city, and Sydney Trains run direct to Katoomba. Fly Sydney to Cairns (about 3 hours), then rent a car or use shuttles for the 70-minute coastal drive to Port Douglas.

Tips for your crew

  • Get an Opal card or tap a contactless bank card on Sydney trains, buses and ferries.
  • Book outer-reef trips for your first Cairns days so you have spare days if weather cancels a trip.
  • Blue Mountains evenings are cold even in summer, so pack a warm layer.
