When to go
April through October is the drier, sunnier half of the year, with calmer seas on many south and west shores. Summer is also the busiest travel period. Winter brings bigger surf on north-facing beaches and more rain, so it suits watchers more than swimmers.
Getting around
Short inter-island flights connect Maui, Oahu and the Big Island, so build in airport time on each transfer day. On every island a rental car gives the most freedom, though Waikiki and central Honolulu are easy without one.
Tips for your crew
- Treat the flights between islands as half days. Leave mornings open for beaches, and avoid squeezing big hikes into travel days.
- Reserve rental cars early, since island supply can run short in busy periods. Also book popular tours and any volcano or sunrise activities ahead.
