The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Lofoten & Tromsø.

Start at the far end of Lofoten in Reine, where red rorbuer sit under snow-covered peaks at Hamnøy and Sakrisøy and the road runs out at Å. Drive the E10 north past Ramberg beach and Nusfjord to Svolvær, sleep in a fishermen's cabin on Svinøya and spend a day in Henningsvær. From Svolvær take the Hurtigruten or fly north to Tromsø for the polar night. Ride Fjellheisen at blue hour, hear a concert in the Arctic Cathedral and go out with sled dogs on Kvaløya. Every clear night is a chance for the northern lights.

Good for Travellers who want Arctic scenery, northern lights and fishing-village quiet over a city Christmas.

When to go

In Tromsø the sun stays below the horizon from about 27 November to 15 January, with a few hours of blue twilight around noon. In Lofoten the sun barely clears the mountains in December, but midday light is usable for driving and photos. The aurora season runs from September to early April; clear, cold nights in December and February to March are best, and from late February the light returns fast.

Getting around

Fly Oslo to Bodø and on to Leknes with Widerøe, or take the car ferry from Bodø to Moskenes (about 3 to 3.5 hours). Hire a car with studded tyres; Reine to Svolvær is about 130 km on the E10, 2 hours in good conditions. From Svolvær the northbound Hurtigruten sails in the evening and reaches Tromsø the next afternoon, or fly via Bodø. In Tromsø the airport bus and city buses reach everything; tours pick up in the centre.

Tips for your crew

  • Leave time buffers: the E10 and the ferry can close in storms, and Hurtigruten calls shift with the weather.
  • Check the aurora forecast and cloud cover each afternoon and be ready to drive to a clear patch.
  • Many Lofoten cafes and shops cut their hours in December; plan meals and fuel around Reine, Leknes and Svolvær.
