The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Montréal, Québec City & Charlevoix.

Start in Montréal, where Old Montréal's stone streets, Mount Royal and Jean-Talon Market set a food-first pace. Take the train or drive Highway 40 to Québec City, the only walled city north of Mexico, and walk from the Château Frontenac down to Quartier Petit Champlain. Day-trip to Montmorency Falls and the farm stands of Île d'Orléans. Finish in Charlevoix, where Baie-Saint-Paul's galleries, Le Massif's river views and the cliffs of Hautes-Gorges show the St. Lawrence at its widest.

Good for Food lovers and history buffs who want Europe-style old towns without crossing an ocean.

When to go

June through mid-October is best, with late September to early October bringing fall colour in Charlevoix. Winter is cold but Québec City's Carnaval in February is a draw. Summer is festival season in Montréal.

Getting around

VIA Rail links Montréal and Québec City in about 3.5 hours, and both old towns are walkable. Rent a car in Québec City for Île d'Orléans and Charlevoix, a 90-minute drive along Route 138.

Tips for your crew

  • French is the first language; a simple 'bonjour' before switching to English goes a long way.
  • Book Charlevoix lodging early for fall colour weekends, which sell out.
  • Many Québec restaurants offer a table d'hôte set menu at dinner that is better value than ordering à la carte.
