The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Salt Lake City New Year's Eve.

Salt Lake City's New Year's Eve centers on The Gateway, the outdoor shopping district west of downtown. For 2025-26, its free Last Hurrah ran from 8 p.m. to midnight with live music, pop-up bars and downtown's only New Year's Eve fireworks at midnight. Before that, walk through the Christmas lights at Temple Square, eat mole at Red Iguana, open since 1985, or seafood at Market Street Grill, and have a drink at Bar X, open since 1933. On Jan 1, drive 40 minutes up Big Cottonwood Canyon to ski or snowshoe at Brighton and Silver Lake, then eat by the fire at the Silver Fork Lodge.

Good for Friends and families who want a free downtown countdown and a day of snow on Jan 1.

When to go

Arrive Dec 30 and leave Jan 2. In 2025 the Last Hurrah at The Gateway ran from 8 p.m. to midnight, with fireworks at midnight; check The Gateway and the Downtown Alliance for the current year. The Temple Square lights typically stay on through Dec 31. Dec 31 is cold, with highs in the upper 30s F and nights in the 20s F; winter inversions can bring haze to the valley, while the canyons get fresh snow.

Getting around

Fly into Salt Lake City International (SLC), 15 minutes from downtown on TRAX's Green Line. TRAX stops beside The Gateway and Temple Square; check UTA for any late service on Dec 31. Rideshare surges after midnight. On Jan 1, Big Cottonwood Canyon is about 40 minutes by car; traction laws often require 4WD or chains, and UTA ski buses run from the canyon mouth.

Tips for your crew

  • Stand in The Gateway's central plaza by 11:30 p.m. for the fireworks.
  • Book Red Iguana early or expect a long wait; it is busy all holiday week.
  • Check the UDOT canyon road report before driving up on Jan 1.
