Planning Phoenix New Year's Eve.

Phoenix trades snow for 65-degree afternoons and clear desert nights. Spend Dec 30 downtown with pizza at Pizzeria Bianco in Heritage Square and cocktails at Bitter & Twisted. On Dec 31 go classic with a steak at Durant's and the Phoenix Symphony's New Year's Eve concert and champagne toast at Symphony Hall, then stay out at Valley Bar or the Arizona Biltmore's party. Jan 1 is for the desert: an early hike up Camelback Mountain or an easy scramble to Hole-in-the-Rock in Papago Park, the Desert Botanical Garden next door, and Phoenix ZooLights after dark.

Good for Anyone who wants warm afternoons, classic dinners and a sunrise desert hike to start the year.

When to go

Arrive Dec 30. Phoenix has no city fireworks show or public countdown, and Arizona law bans consumer fireworks that fly, so midnight is about ticketed concerts, bars and resort parties. The Phoenix Symphony's NYE concert with a champagne toast is an annual event at Symphony Hall (held again in 2025), typically starting at 7:30 pm. Bitter & Twisted, Valley Bar and the Arizona Biltmore all held NYE events in 2025 that sold out in December. Dec 31 is usually sunny with highs in the mid-60s F and nights in the low 40s, so bring a jacket. ZooLights ran Nov 26, 2025 to Jan 16, 2026. On Jan 1 trailheads fill at dawn; many downtown restaurants close.

Getting around

Valley Metro has offered free rides on New Year's Eve (2025); the light rail runs through downtown on Central Avenue and east along Washington Street toward Tempe, stopping about a mile from Papago Park. Downtown is walkable, but the Biltmore, Arcadia and Camelback are a 15- to 20-minute drive. Rideshare surges after midnight. Echo Canyon trailhead parking on Camelback is small and fills by sunrise on Jan 1; Papago Park and the Desert Botanical Garden have large lots.

Tips for your crew

  • Start the Jan 1 hike at first light; Echo Canyon is steep and busy, so pick Hole-in-the-Rock for an easy 15-minute walk instead.
  • Desert nights are cold; pack a warm layer for any outdoor patio or rooftop on Dec 31.
  • Pizzeria Bianco does not take big-group reservations; go at opening or put your name in and wait at Bar Bianco next door.
