The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Kerala Backwaters & Tea Hills.

Kerala's classic loop runs from the old port of Kochi up into the tea hills of Munnar and back down to the canals of Alleppey and Kumarakom. In Fort Kochi, walk past the Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church and the spice warehouses of Mattancherry and Jew Town. Munnar's estates roll across the Western Ghats, with Nilgiri tahr at Eravikulam National Park and tea tours at the Tata Tea Museum. End on Vembanad Lake with a night on a rice-barge houseboat and early birding at Kumarakom.

Good for Slow travelers who want green landscapes, seafood and spice-laden cooking.

When to go

October to March is dry and comfortable, with cool nights in Munnar. The southwest monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and some road closures in the hills, though Ayurveda centers are busiest then.

Getting around

Fly into Cochin International Airport. A hired car with driver is the easiest way to link Kochi, Munnar (about 4 hours) and Alleppey (about 4–5 hours from Munnar). Local ferries and auto-rickshaws handle short hops.

Tips for your crew

  • Book houseboats through licensed operators listed by Kerala Tourism and confirm what meals are included.
  • Eravikulam National Park closes for the Nilgiri tahr calving season, usually February to March.
  • Kathakali performances in Kochi let you watch the makeup session an hour before the show.
