Trip guide
Six days on the shores of the Great Lakes, starting big and getting quieter. Chicago comes first, with Millennium Park, the Riverwalk and an architecture cruise to set the tone. Milwaukee follows as the easygoing middle chapter, built around the Third Ward's markets and galleries. Door County closes the trip, where Peninsula State Park's bluff trails and lighthouse replace skyline views with water, woods and small harbor towns. The pace slows with every leg.
Good for Friends who like cities first, lakeside calm second
Summer is the sweet spot, roughly June through September. Lake breezes keep Chicago comfortable, boat tours run in full, and Door County's parks and village shops are open and lively. Shoulder months can be lovely, but some seasonal businesses on the peninsula scale back.
Most travelers drive. Chicago works fine without a car, so many groups pick one up when leaving for Milwaukee. From there the road continues north up the Wisconsin shore to Door County, where having your own car matters for reaching parks and villages.
