The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Fairbanks, Talkeetna & Anchorage.

Fly into Fairbanks and head straight out to Chena Hot Springs, an hour and a quarter up a dead-end road, to soak in an outdoor hot spring under the northern lights and drink from an ice glass at the Aurora Ice Museum. Back in Fairbanks, visit the Museum of the North, ski at Creamer's Field, drive to Santa Claus House in North Pole and chase the aurora from Cleary Summit. Ride the Alaska Railroad's Aurora Winter Train south to Talkeetna, a log-cabin river town where Denali climbers start out, for flightseeing when the weather clears. Finish in Anchorage with the Coastal Trail, ski planes on frozen Lake Hood and the Anchorage Museum.

Good for Travelers who want a real chance at the northern lights, plus hot springs, a scenic train and small-town Alaska in deep winter.

When to go

Interior Alaska's aurora season runs from late August to mid-April, and the long nights of December through March give the most hours of darkness; clear, cold nights are best. Fairbanks gets under four hours of daylight around the December solstice and often falls to -20°F to -40°F in January. Talkeetna's Winterfest, with its Wilderness Woman Contest and Bachelor Auction, is held in early December. Late February and March bring more daylight, milder cold and Anchorage's Fur Rendezvous and the start of the Iditarod.

Getting around

Fly into Fairbanks (FAI) and out of Anchorage (ANC). Chena Hot Springs is about 60 miles from Fairbanks on Chena Hot Springs Road, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, and the resort runs shuttles from town. In winter the Alaska Railroad's Aurora Winter Train runs between Fairbanks and Anchorage on weekends, stopping in Talkeetna; check the current schedule, as there is only one train each way per weekend. Driving the Parks Highway, Fairbanks to Talkeetna is about 4.5 hours and Talkeetna to Anchorage about 2 hours. Rent a car with winter tires and an engine block heater, and plug it in overnight when it is very cold.

Tips for your crew

  • Check the University of Alaska Fairbanks aurora forecast and the cloud cover each afternoon, and stay up past 10 pm; the lights are often strongest around midnight.
  • Dress in layers with insulated boots, mittens and a face covering; a phone battery dies fast in the cold, so keep it in an inside pocket.
  • Book the Aurora Winter Train and Chena Hot Springs rooms early for December holiday weekends.
