Planning Alaska Glacier Route.
This is a week of big scenery with a clear arc. You land in Anchorage, where the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail gives an easy first look at the mountains behind the city. Then the road turns south to Seward, the trip's centerpiece, with a walk to Exit Glacier and a wildlife cruise into Kenai Fjords. Homer is the final stop, ending on the long gravel bar of the Spit with its seafood spots and boats.

When to go
June through August brings the long daylight that makes the schedule easy. Tours into the fjords operate on a full summer calendar, trails are mostly clear, and wildlife is active. Outside those months, many cruises and seasonal businesses stop or cut back.
Getting around
A rental car is the standard choice, since the route follows scenic highway from Anchorage down the Kenai Peninsula to Homer. Some travelers take the train for part of the way. Check road conditions and allow slow stretches during busy summer weekends.
