Trip guide

Planning Scandinavian Capitals.

Three capitals, one calm, well-organized loop. Copenhagen opens with the colored facades of Nyhavn and evenings in Tivoli Gardens. Stockholm follows, spread across islands, with the old town lanes of Gamla Stan and the preserved warship at the Vasa Museum. Oslo ends the trip, where you can walk up the marble roof of the Opera House beside the fjord and wander the sculptures of Vigeland Park.

Good for Design lovers and first-time Nordic city explorers

When to go

June through August gives the long northern evenings, mild weather and the best chance of comfortable time outdoors. Boats, terraces and outdoor attractions are all in season. Summer also brings more visitors and higher demand for rooms, so settle your dates early.

Getting around

Trains link the capitals well, and some travelers add short flights or an overnight ferry for variety. Within each city, walking, public transit and bikes are the usual choices. You rarely need a car on this route.

Tips for your crew

  • Pick one or two main sights per day in each city. They are compact, and unhurried waterside walks are half the appeal.
  • Book rooms early for summer. Central stays in all three capitals fill up first, and staying near the station keeps transfers simple.
  • Use the long evenings. Plan a late dinner or harbor stroll rather than rushing back, since the light stays good well into the night.
