The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Prague, Vienna & Budapest.

This classic Central European loop strings together three former Habsburg capitals, each about four hours apart by train. Start in Prague with the castle district, Charles Bridge and the Jewish Quarter of Josefov. In Vienna, split time between Schönbrunn Palace, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and long afternoons in coffeehouses like Café Sperl. Finish in Budapest, where the Parliament on the Danube, Buda Castle and the Széchenyi Thermal Bath set the pace. Food runs from Czech pub cooking to Wiener schnitzel and Hungarian lángos.

Good for First-time visitors to Central Europe who want history, music and easy train travel.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn bring mild weather and thinner crowds than July and August. December is cold but the Christmas markets in all three cities draw many visitors.

Getting around

Direct trains run Prague–Vienna (about 4 hours) and Vienna–Budapest (about 2.5 hours); book ahead on ČD, ÖBB or MÁV for lower fares. Within each city, trams and metros cover everything, and the old centers are walkable.

Tips for your crew

  • Czechia and Hungary use their own currencies, so use a bank card or ATM rather than street exchange booths.
  • Buy Vienna State Opera standing-room tickets online or on the day for a few euros.
  • Bring a swimsuit and flip-flops for Budapest's thermal baths; lockers or cabins cost extra.
