The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Salt Lake City & Park City.

Start with two nights in Salt Lake City for the Christmas lights at Temple Square, a Christmas concert at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, Ballet West's Nutcracker at the Capitol Theatre and a skate at the Gallivan Center. Then drive 35 minutes up Parleys Canyon to Park City, an old silver-mining town whose Main Street is lit for the holidays. Ski Park City Mountain straight from town on the Town Lift, take a groomed day at Deer Valley, and ride the bobsled track at Utah Olympic Park. Evenings are for the High West saloon, the No Name and a show at the Egyptian Theatre.

Good for Skiers and families who want a city Christmas and a mountain town in one easy trip.

When to go

Temple Square's Christmas lights switch on the day after Thanksgiving and stay on nightly through December 31. Park City Mountain usually opens in late November and Deer Valley in early December; snow is most reliable from mid-December. The resorts close the year with fireworks on New Year's Eve, and Sundance fills Park City in late January.

Getting around

Fly into Salt Lake City International (SLC). TRAX light rail runs from the airport to downtown Salt Lake City. Park City is about 35 minutes east on I-80 through Parleys Canyon; Utah's traction law can require snow tires or chains in storms. In Park City, free city buses link Old Town, Park City Mountain and Deer Valley, so a car is optional once you arrive.

Tips for your crew

  • Visit Temple Square on a weeknight soon after dark; weekends before Christmas are crowded until late.
  • Buy lift tickets online in advance; window prices at Park City Mountain and Deer Valley are much higher in the holiday weeks.
  • Deer Valley is for skiers only; snowboarders should plan their days at Park City Mountain.
