Planning Tampa New Year's Eve.

Spend New Year's Eve in downtown Tampa on the Hillsborough River. Start with a classic dinner: steak and the upstairs dessert room at Bern's, Spanish-Cuban food at the 1905 Columbia in Ybor City, or Florida dishes at Ulele by the old water works. For 2025-26, the Friends of the Tampa Riverwalk and Jackson's Bistro put on a midnight fireworks show over the river, free to watch from the Riverwalk; Armature Works also ran a ticketed party with its own midnight fireworks. On Jan 1, cross the bay to St. Petersburg for brunch at the Vinoy, the Dali Museum and the St. Pete Pier, smoked fish at Ted Peters, and a walk on the white sand at Fort De Soto Park.

Good for Couples and friends who want a warm-weather New Year with old-school dinners and a beach morning after.

When to go

Arrive Dec 30 and leave Jan 2. Downtown Tampa's riverfront show is the main free option: in 2025 viewing areas along the Riverwalk opened around 9 p.m. ahead of midnight fireworks over the Hillsborough River; check the Friends of the Tampa Riverwalk for the current year. Ticketed parties at Jackson's Bistro on Harbour Island and Armature Works in Tampa Heights sell out in December. A college bowl game at Raymond James Stadium often falls around New Year's and fills hotels. Dec 31 is mild, with highs in the low 70s F and lows in the mid-50s F. On Jan 1, beaches and parks are open, and many restaurants run brunch; check museum holiday hours.

Getting around

Fly into Tampa International (TPA), 15 minutes from downtown. The TECO Line Streetcar is fare-free and links downtown, Channelside and Ybor City; the Pirate Water Taxi stops along the Riverwalk. Roads near Curtis Hixon Park and Harbour Island get congested after 11 p.m., and rideshare surges after midnight, so stay within walking distance of the river. On Jan 1, St. Petersburg is about 30 minutes across the Howard Frankland Bridge; Fort De Soto is 30 more minutes south and charges a small parking fee.

Tips for your crew

  • Watch the fireworks from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park or the Riverwalk near the Straz Center for an open view over the river.
  • Book Bern's well ahead and save room for the Harry Waugh Dessert Room upstairs.
  • Pack a light jacket: evenings by the water can drop into the 50s F.
