Planning St. Louis New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve in St. Louis starts early. For 2025-26, Winterfest held a free Neon Nights party in Kiener Plaza from 4 to 8 p.m. on Dec 31, ending with fireworks against the Gateway Arch at 8 p.m. That leaves time for dinner and a drink under the light show in the Grand Hall at Union Station, where you can also stay. Spend Dec 30 at the City Museum and the Arch, with a malt at Crown Candy Kitchen, open since 1913. On Jan 1, walk Forest Park from Art Hill down to the Grand Basin, see the mosaics in the Cathedral Basilica, and eat burgers at Blueberry Hill on the Delmar Loop.

Good for Families and couples who want an early fireworks night and quiet park walks on Jan 1.

When to go

Arrive Dec 30 and leave Jan 2. In 2025 the free Kiener Plaza party ran from 4 to 8 p.m. on Dec 31 with fireworks at 8 p.m.; check Winterfest for the current year. There is no big public midnight countdown, so book a ticketed hotel or bar party if you want one. Dec 31 is cold, with highs around 40 F and nights in the 20s F. On Jan 1 many museums and the Arch tram close or keep holiday hours; check before you go.

Getting around

Fly into St. Louis Lambert (STL); MetroLink runs from the airport to Union Station and downtown in about 30 minutes, and on to Forest Park and the Delmar Loop. Downtown streets around Kiener Plaza close for the party, and rideshare surges after the fireworks and again after midnight. On Jan 1, Forest Park and the Central West End are about 10 minutes west of downtown by car or MetroLink.

Tips for your crew

  • Stand on the west side of Kiener Plaza for the fireworks framed by the Old Courthouse and the Arch.
  • Plan your dinner for after the 8 p.m. fireworks, when downtown restaurants are less busy.
  • Bring a sled on Jan 1 if it has snowed; Art Hill is the city's favorite sledding slope.
