Planning Seattle New Year's Eve.

Spend Dec 30 in Seattle Center at Chihuly Garden and Glass, then walk up Queen Anne to Kerry Park for the postcard view of the Space Needle in front of the towers. On New Year's Eve have dinner at Canlis above Lake Union or in Post Alley at The Pink Door, then choose your view of New Year's at the Needle: on the Seattle Center lawns for the dance party at the International Fountain, from Kerry Park, or across the lake at Gas Works Park. On Jan 1 the Pike Place Market is open, with croissants at Le Panier and brunch at Cafe Campagne, followed by a walk through the Olympic Sculpture Park or out to the West Point lighthouse in Discovery Park.

Good for Friends and couples who want a big free fireworks show and an easy, walkable New Year's Day.

When to go

In 2025 the free show ran on this schedule: light-only shows on the Space Needle at 10, 10:30, 11 and 11:30 pm, then an 18-minute drone and fireworks show from 11:53 pm, with fireworks launched from the tower at midnight. Seattle Center held a dance party at the International Fountain from 9 pm and kept the Armory open until 1 am; safety zones around the Needle closed from 4:30 pm. Expect 3-7 C and a good chance of rain or low cloud, which can hide the top of the tower. On Jan 1 the Pike Place Market is open (it closes only on Thanksgiving and Christmas), though some restaurants keep holiday hours.

Getting around

The Seattle Center Monorail runs to and from Westlake until 10:30 pm, pauses for the fireworks, and restarts around 12:20 am, with the last train downtown at about 1 am. Link light rail runs late on New Year's Eve; check Sound Transit's holiday schedule. Streets around Seattle Center close in the evening, parking garages fill early, and rideshare surges sharply after midnight; walking downtown takes about 25 minutes. Kerry Park is a steep 15-minute walk up Queen Anne Avenue from the Center.

Tips for your crew

  • Tune to HITS 106.1, which plays the show's synced soundtrack, if you watch from Kerry Park or Gas Works Park.
  • Book Canlis as early as reservations open; New Year's Eve fills first.
  • Bring a rain shell rather than an umbrella; umbrellas block views on crowded lawns.
