Planning Sacramento New Year's Eve.

Sacramento's New Year's Eve happens early and outdoors: Old Sacramento's free Countdown on the Cobblestones fills the Gold Rush-era waterfront with live music and ends with a close-up fireworks and light show at 9 p.m. Spend December 30 on the wooden sidewalks of Old Sac, at the State Railroad Museum and walking the gold Tower Bridge at dusk. On December 31, eat an early dinner at the Firehouse or downtown, catch the 9 p.m. show, then sleep aboard the Delta King riverboat. On January 1, walk Capitol Park under its old trees, brunch at Tower Cafe and loop McKinley Park or Land Park.

Good for Families and anyone who prefers fireworks at 9 p.m. to staying up for midnight.

When to go

Countdown on the Cobblestones returned in 2024 after several years off and ran again on December 31, 2025, from 5 to 10 p.m., free, with one countdown and fireworks at 9 p.m. at Front and K streets by the Holiday Tree; there is no midnight show. Old Sacramento's streets close to cars from about 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. Expect 5-12 C, often damp or foggy. On January 1, the Capitol Museum and Sutter's Fort are typically closed, while parks stay open.

Getting around

Fly into Sacramento International (SMF), about 20 minutes from downtown. On New Year's Eve 2025 the city sold prepaid $20 parking at the Old Sacramento and Tower Bridge garages from 3 p.m., ran a free tuk-tuk shuttle from Front and L and Second and I streets, and listed SacRT bus routes 11, 30, 31, 62, 86 and 88 for the waterfront. Downtown, Old Sac and the Capitol are a 15-minute walk apart; Midtown and Land Park are a short drive or rideshare.

Tips for your crew

  • Book dinner for 6 p.m. so you are on Front Street with a view of the Holiday Tree before 8:30.
  • Stand on the riverside end of K Street for a clear view of the fireworks.
  • Bring a layer for the river damp; it feels colder by the water.
