The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Pittsburgh New Year's Eve.

Pittsburgh's New Year's Eve is Highmark First Night, a family-friendly arts festival across the 14 blocks of the downtown Cultural District. For 2024-25 it ran from 6 p.m. with an early fireworks show and ended at midnight, when the Future of Pittsburgh ball rose about 75 feet at Stanwix Street and Penn Avenue under a larger display. Before it starts, skate under the tree at PPG Place and eat fish sandwiches at the Original Oyster House, open since 1870. On Jan 1, ride the Duquesne Incline up Mount Washington for the view of the three rivers, then eat a Primanti Bros. sandwich in the Strip District.

Good for Families and friends who want a free, walkable downtown New Year and river views on Jan 1.

When to go

Arrive Dec 30 and leave Jan 2. First Night typically runs from about 6 p.m. to just after midnight on Dec 31, with an early fireworks show in the evening and the ball rise and fireworks at midnight; check the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the current schedule and which indoor shows need tickets. Dec 31 is cold, with highs in the upper 30s F and nights in the 20s F, and snow is possible. On Jan 1 many downtown shops close, but the inclines usually run; check holiday hours.

Getting around

Fly into Pittsburgh International (PIT), about 30 minutes from downtown. In 2024 the city closed Stanwix Street from 10 a.m. and Penn Avenue between Fifth Avenue and Ninth Street from 4 p.m. on Dec 31, so walk or take the T, which is free between downtown stations. Rideshare pickups move to the edge of the closures and surge after midnight. On Jan 1, the Duquesne and Monongahela inclines climb Mount Washington from the riverbank; the Strip District is a 25-minute walk from downtown.

Tips for your crew

  • Stand on Stanwix Street near Penn Avenue by 11:30 p.m. for a close view of the ball rise.
  • Wear boots and layers; you will spend hours outdoors in the cold.
  • Ride the Duquesne Incline up and the Monongahela Incline down to see both.
