Planning Milwaukee New Year's Eve.

Stay at the Pfister and spend Dec 30 downtown: a walk along the Milwaukee Riverwalk, a German dinner at Mader's, and a nightcap at Blu on the Pfister's 23rd floor. On New Year's Eve, go to the Deer District outside Fiserv Forum for the free 8 p.m. fireworks, then book a late show at the Pabst Theater or dinner and a midnight toast back at the hotel. On Jan 1, head to the lakefront for the Polar Bear Plunge into Lake Michigan at Bradford Beach at noon, then warm up with a walk through Lake Park to the North Point Lighthouse and a film at the Oriental Theatre.

Good for Friends who want an easy, walkable New Year's with Old World dinners and a cold-water start to Jan 1.

When to go

Milwaukee's public New Year's Eve fireworks are an early show in the Deer District, the plaza outside Fiserv Forum, launched from across The Trade Hotel. They have run at 8 p.m. for about 15 minutes in 2023, 2024 and 2025, presented by the We Energies Foundation; viewing is free with no tickets. There is no big public countdown at midnight, so the late night is up to bars, hotel parties and shows. The Polar Bear Plunge at Bradford Beach starts at noon on Jan 1 and is free; on Jan 1, 2026 hundreds went in at about -10 C with snow and wind. Dec 31 is typically -9 to 0 C.

Getting around

Fly into Milwaukee Mitchell International (MKE), about 15 minutes from downtown, or take Amtrak's Hiawatha from Chicago to the Intermodal Station. The Pfister, the Riverwalk, the Pabst Theater and Fiserv Forum are all within a 15-minute walk. The Hop streetcar connects downtown, the Third Ward and the lakefront by day; MCTS has offered free rides on New Year's Eve in recent years, so check its announcement. Bradford Beach is a 10-minute drive north on Lincoln Memorial Drive, and parking along the drive fills before the plunge. Rideshare surges after midnight.

Tips for your crew

  • Watch the 8 p.m. fireworks from the Deer District plaza, then you still have time for a full dinner before midnight.
  • For the plunge, bring water shoes, a towel and a warm change of clothes; lake ice can be sharp at the edge.
  • Dress for wind chill on Dec 31; the walk from the river to Fiserv Forum is short but exposed.
