Planning Louisville New Year's Eve.

Stay at the Seelbach and spend Dec 30 on bourbon: a drink in the Old Seelbach Bar, a Hot Brown at the Brown Hotel, and dinner at Jack Fry's in the Highlands. On New Year's Eve, walk the Big Four Bridge at dusk for the skyline over the Ohio, eat downtown at Jeff Ruby's or Proof on Main, then choose between the free NYE Live! party and ball drop at Fourth Street Live! and a late river cruise on the Belle of Louisville fleet. Families can catch the early fireworks at Kentucky Kingdom. Spend Jan 1 in the Highlands: coffee and brunch on Bardstown Road, then a walk through Olmsted's Cherokee Park to Hogan's Fountain.

Good for Couples and friends who want a bourbon-town New Year's Eve with grand old hotels and short walks.

When to go

NYE Live! at Fourth Street Live! is the city's main downtown countdown, billed as its only Times Square-style ball drop; it was held again on Dec 31, 2025 starting at 8 p.m., with free general entry for ages 21 and up and paid VIP packages. Louisville has no downtown midnight fireworks; the public show in 2025 was at Kentucky Kingdom at 8:50 p.m., included with park admission. The Belle of Louisville fleet ran a ticketed New Year's cruise on the Mary M. Miller from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. in 2025. Dec 31 is typically -3 to 7 C. On Jan 1 many restaurants close or open late, so book brunch.

Getting around

Fly into Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF), about 15 minutes from downtown. Downtown is compact: the Seelbach and Brown Hotel are a few blocks from Fourth Street Live!, and the waterfront and Belle wharf are a 10-minute walk north. TARC buses run holiday schedules and are not practical after midnight, so plan on walking or rideshare, which surges right after the ball drop. Garages near Fourth Street fill on Dec 31; park in the afternoon or leave the car at the hotel. The Highlands are a 10-minute drive east along Broadway and Bardstown Road.

Tips for your crew

  • Bring photo ID; Fourth Street Live! checks age at the door and the courtyard is 21 and up.
  • Book the Belle's New Year's cruise early; it sells out and boards from the wharf at the foot of Fourth Street.
  • Kentucky Kingdom's fireworks are early in the evening, so a family can see them and still be back downtown for dinner.
