Planning Key West New Year's Eve.

Key West marks midnight with three drops instead of one ball. For 2025-26, Sloppy Joe's lowered a giant conch shell over Duval Street, a drag performer rode a red high heel down from the balcony of the Bourbon Street Pub, and Schooner Wharf Bar lowered a pirate wench from a schooner's mast with cannon fire. Start with sunset at Mallory Square, eat Cuban at El Siboney or on the water at Louie's Backyard, then walk Duval between the drops. On Jan 1, have breakfast at Blue Heaven and drive up the Overseas Highway to Bahia Honda's beach and the Key deer on Big Pine.

Good for Couples and friends who want a warm, walkable New Year on one street, with a beach day on Jan 1.

When to go

Arrive Dec 30 and leave Jan 2. The drops typically happen at midnight, and Duval is closed to cars near Sloppy Joe's; check each bar's site for the current year. Late December is mild, in the upper 70s F by day and the upper 60s F at night. Hotels sell out early and many require three-night minimums over New Year's.

Getting around

Fly into Key West International (EYW), about 10 minutes from Old Town, or drive about 3.5 hours from Miami on the Overseas Highway. Walk or bike in Old Town; the three drops are within a 15-minute walk of each other. Parking near Duval is scarce on Dec 31. On Jan 1, Bahia Honda is about 50 minutes by car; traffic on the highway is heavy in the afternoon.

Tips for your crew

  • Pick one drop to stand close to and see the others on the walk; you can't reach the front of all three by midnight.
  • Book Louie's Backyard and your hotel in the fall; New Year's dinners and rooms go first.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a light jacket for the walk home after midnight.
