The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Kansas City New Year's Eve.

Base yourself downtown and spend December 30 on the classics: Union Station, the skyline view from the Liberty Memorial lawn, and burnt ends at Jack Stack's Freight House. On New Year's Eve, book a dinner in the Crossroads, then head to NYE Live!, the ticketed party on the covered KC Live! block in the Power & Light District, for the midnight ball drop. If you would rather have a band than a DJ, the Green Lady Lounge keeps jazz going past midnight. On January 1, ride the streetcar south to the Country Club Plaza, where the holiday lights stay on into January, for a late brunch, a walk around Loose Park and the giant Shuttlecocks on the Nelson-Atkins lawn.

Good for Friends who want a big, easy countdown party plus jazz, barbecue and a slow, walkable New Year's Day.

When to go

NYE Live! at KC Live! typically opens around 7 to 8 p.m. on December 31, with packages that bundle entry to the district's bars, an open bar and the midnight ball drop; it is ticketed and sells out in most years. Kelly's Westport Inn drops a ball at 6 p.m. for Ireland's midnight and again at midnight. Kansas City does not have a big public fireworks show downtown. Expect a cold night, often around freezing or below, with a chance of ice or snow. On January 1 the Nelson-Atkins is closed, many downtown restaurants open late or not at all, and the Plaza Lights typically stay on until mid-January.

Getting around

Fly into Kansas City International (MCI), about 30 minutes north of downtown. The KC Streetcar is free and ran extended hours, about 5 a.m. to 2 a.m., on New Year's Eve 2025; it links the River Market, the Power & Light District, the Crossroads and Union Station, and its Main Street extension now continues south toward the Plaza. Rideshare surges after midnight, so walk a few blocks away from the KC Live! block before requesting a car. Downtown garages fill early on December 31.

Tips for your crew

  • Buy NYE Live! packages early; the cheaper tiers sell out first and doors get crowded after 9 p.m.
  • Book New Year's Eve dinner for 6 or 6:30 p.m. so you can walk or ride the streetcar to the ball drop.
  • Order burnt ends at Jack Stack, and do it on December 30, when the Freight House is less packed.
