The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Houston New Year's Eve.

Houston has no single city-run countdown, so the night centers on downtown. Arrive Dec 30 for a walk around Discovery Green and the skyline from Buffalo Bayou Park, then on Dec 31 book an early Creole dinner at Brennan's or a steak at Vic & Anthony's before heading to POST Houston, the old post office turned rooftop park, where a ticketed party ends with midnight fireworks over the skyline. Start the night with a drink at La Carafe on Market Square, inside one of Houston's oldest buildings. On Jan 1, sleep in, get chicken and waffles at The Breakfast Klub in Midtown, and spend the afternoon in Hermann Park: the reflecting pool, the Japanese Garden, McGovern Centennial Gardens and the Houston Zoo.

Good for Friends who want one ticketed rooftop party with real fireworks and an easy, sunny park day after.

When to go

Dec 30 to Jan 1. POST Houston's New Year's Eve party ran 9 pm to 2 am on its Skylawn rooftop in both 2024 and 2025, with fireworks at midnight; tickets (roughly $70 to $100 in 2025) sold out ahead of the night, so buy in November. Houston has no free official downtown fireworks show; the free alternatives are suburban (Kemah Boardwalk typically fires early, around 9 pm). Dec 31 is usually mild, 10-20 C, with a chance of rain or a cold front, so bring a layer for a rooftop. On Jan 1 banks and many offices close; parks and most restaurants open, but museum hours vary, so check the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the zoo before you go.

Getting around

Fly into Houston Bush (IAH, about 35 min to downtown) or Hobby (HOU, about 20 min). METRORail's Red Line runs down Main Street from downtown through Midtown to the Museum District and Hermann Park, and the Green and Purple lines serve the Discovery Green side of downtown; METRO typically extends service on New Year's Eve, so check its holiday schedule. Rideshare surges hard from about 11:30 pm to 2 am around POST and downtown bars; walk a few blocks from the venue before requesting a car. POST has an on-site garage, but it fills early on Dec 31.

Tips for your crew

  • Book Brennan's or Vic & Anthony's for a 6 or 6:30 pm seating so you reach POST's doors without rushing.
  • Bring a jacket to POST: the Skylawn is open to the wind, and fireworks launch from several points across the 5.5-acre roof.
  • Ride METRORail's Red Line on Jan 1 between Midtown and the Hermann Park/Rice U stop instead of hunting for parking near the zoo.
