Planning Detroit New Year's Eve.

Detroit has no public ball drop or fireworks at midnight; the Campus Martius countdown has been on hiatus for years, so the night is built around ticketed parties. Arrive Dec 30 to skate at Campus Martius under the lit trees and eat at Prime + Proper or London Chop House. On Dec 31 book jazz sets at Cliff Bell's or go big at the Resolution Ball in the Masonic Temple, with the Roostertail's riverfront party as the alternative. Jan 1 is for Belle Isle: a cold loop past the Scott Fountain and the Conservatory, the Dossin museum, and a late brunch at Sindbad's.

Good for Couples and friends who want a dressed-up ticketed party and a quiet riverfront morning after.

When to go

There is no free citywide countdown: the Campus Martius drop remains on hiatus (confirmed for NYE 2025). The Resolution Ball at the Masonic Temple ran 8 pm to 3 am on Dec 31, 2025 with a balloon drop and a countdown broadcast on FOX 2; tickets started around $50 and it sells out close to the date. The Roostertail ran 8 pm to 3 am the same night. Cliff Bell's typically runs two dinner shows plus a midnight set. The Campus Martius rink was open 11 am to 10 pm on NYE 2025. Expect highs near freezing and possible snow. On Jan 1 many restaurants and museums close or open late, so check holiday hours.

Getting around

Downtown, Campus Martius, Cliff Bell's and the Book Cadillac are all walkable; the Masonic Temple is a 25-minute walk or a short ride up Cass Avenue. Rideshare surges sharply between 12:30 and 2 am, so pre-book or wait it out at the party. Belle Isle is a 10-minute drive east over the MacArthur Bridge; vehicles need a Michigan Recreation Passport or a nonresident day pass, while walkers and cyclists enter free. DTW airport is about 30 minutes by car.

Tips for your crew

  • Buy Resolution Ball or Cliff Bell's tickets by mid-December; both sold out close to the date in recent years.
  • Skate Campus Martius on Dec 30 or early Dec 31 before the rink closes for the night.
  • On Jan 1 check Conservatory and Aquarium holiday hours before driving to Belle Isle; the park itself is open daily.
