Planning Austin New Year's Eve.

Austin's countdown is a free concert on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake, with the downtown skyline across the water and fireworks over the lake at midnight. Arrive Dec 30, check into the Driskill on Sixth Street, and catch a band at the Continental Club on South Congress. On Dec 31, have an early dinner at Jeffrey's in Clarksville or Uchi on South Lamar, then walk to Vic Mathias Shores for Austin's New Year, or watch from the Congress Avenue Bridge or the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge. On Jan 1, join the crowd jumping into 68-degree Barton Springs Pool for the Polar Bear Splash, walk Zilker Park and the Barton Creek Greenbelt, and refuel with pancakes at Kerbey Lane Cafe.

Good for Music fans who want a free lakeside countdown and an outdoorsy, very Austin first day of the year.

When to go

Dec 30 to Jan 1. Austin's New Year is free and was held at Vic Mathias (Auditorium) Shores in both 2024 and 2025; in 2025 it ran 7 pm to 12:30 am with a drone show at 11:45 pm and fireworks from 11:55 pm to midnight. Entrances are on the east and west ends of the park, bags are searched, and pets other than service animals are not allowed; bring a blanket or low chair. Dec 31 is usually cool, 5-17 C, and can turn cold after a front. On Jan 1 the Save Our Springs Alliance holds its Polar Bear Splash at Barton Springs Pool (8:30 am to 2:30 pm in 2026, with the group jump at 9:30 am), a tradition of more than 30 years.

Getting around

Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is about 20 min from downtown. In 2025 CapMetro made all buses and trains free from 5 pm on Dec 31, with rail running until 2:30 am; check for a repeat. West Riverside Drive closed from 6 pm to 1 am and South First Street from 10:30 pm to 1 am around the park, and the lake between the railroad trestle and the South First bridge closed to boats. Rideshare surges from 11:45 pm to about 1:30 am; walk north over the Congress or First Street bridge before requesting a car. Zilker Park and Barton Springs are a 10-minute ride or a 30-minute walk west along the lake trail.

Tips for your crew

  • Eat dinner by 7:30 pm and walk to the shores; downtown traffic stalls once the bridges close.
  • For a quieter view, stand on the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, which looks back at the skyline over the water.
  • Bring a towel, sandals and a warm layer to Barton Springs on Jan 1; the water is about 68 F but the air can be colder.
