This short trip starts with city nights and ends with sand and quiet water. New Orleans takes the most time, with jazz in the French Quarter, a streetcar ride through the Garden District and late beignets at Cafe du Monde. Then you drive east to Gulf Shores for white-sand beach days and pier walks at Gulf State Park. Mobile caps the trip with a visit to the USS Alabama on the bay.

February through May balances mild weather with festival season in New Orleans. Spring is comfortable for walking and for beach afternoons, before the heat and humidity of summer set in. Gulf water is cooler in early spring, so pack for sun rather than swimming.
A rental car works best for the stretch along the Gulf, since the three stops are connected by highway. In New Orleans itself, streetcars, rideshares and walking cover most needs, so many groups park the car for the city days.
