The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Rovaniemi, Saariselkä & Helsinki.

Fly north first. Spend three nights in Rovaniemi to cross the Arctic Circle at Santa Claus Village, see SantaPark and the Arktikum museum, and walk the frozen riverfront under the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge. Continue up the Arctic Road to Saariselkä for two or three nights of aurora watching from Kaunispää fell, ski trails into Urho Kekkonen National Park and a night in a glass igloo at Kakslauttanen. Fly back to Helsinki for the Christmas market on Senate Square, the lights on Aleksanterinkatu and a sauna at Löyly before heading home.

Good for Families and couples who want snow, Santa and a real shot at the northern lights in one trip.

When to go

Snow is reliable in Lapland from late November, with -10 to -25 °C common in December. Saariselkä has polar night from early December to early January, so the sun does not rise but there are a few hours of blue twilight; Rovaniemi gets two to three hours of daylight. Auroras need clear, dark skies and show most nights with good activity. The Helsinki Christmas Market on Senate Square ran 28 November – 22 December in 2025, and the Aleksanterinkatu Christmas Street lights go on in late November.

Getting around

Fly Helsinki – Rovaniemi (about 1 h 20 min), or take VR's overnight sleeper train (about 10–12 h). From Rovaniemi, coaches run up Highway 4 to Saariselkä in about 4 hours; Ivalo Airport is 25 minutes from Saariselkä and has direct flights to Helsinki (about 1 h 40 min) with an airport bus timed to arrivals. Driving in Lapland means studded winter tyres and long dark stretches with reindeer on the road; most visitors use buses and tour pickups instead.

Tips for your crew

  • Book aurora trips, husky safaris and glass igloos months ahead for December; the week before Christmas sells out first.
  • Dress in layers with wool next to the skin; most safari operators lend thermal overalls, boots and mittens.
  • Check the aurora forecast and cloud cover each afternoon and go out between 9 pm and 1 am.
