The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Stowe, Woodstock & the White Mountains.

Start in Stowe, where the white steeple of the Community Church sits under Mount Mansfield; ski the mountain, then skate or cross-country ski at the Trapp Family Lodge. Drive south to Woodstock for a village green, a covered bridge in the middle of town, Billings Farm and the Woodstock Inn, with Simon Pearce glassblowers down the road in Quechee. Finish in New Hampshire's White Mountains: ski Bretton Woods below the red roofs of the Mount Washington Hotel, drive through Crawford Notch, and end in Jackson, where you cross a red covered bridge onto one of the East's best Nordic trail networks.

Good for Couples and families who want snowy New England villages, a few ski days and old inns with fireplaces.

When to go

Stowe and the White Mountains ski areas usually open between mid-November and early December, with the most reliable snow from mid-December through March. Woodstock's Wassail Weekend, with its parade of horses and carriages, falls on the second weekend of December, and Billings Farm runs Christmas weekends through December. Santa's Village in Jefferson opens for the holiday season on weekends from late November. The week between Christmas and New Year's is the busiest and priciest of the season.

Getting around

Fly into Burlington (BTV), 45 minutes from Stowe, and out of Portland, Maine (PWM), about 1.5 hours from Jackson. Stowe to Woodstock is about 1 hour 45 minutes via I-89; Woodstock to Bretton Woods is about 2 hours via I-89, I-91 and I-93; Bretton Woods to Jackson is 45 minutes through Crawford Notch on US-302 and NH-16. Rent an all-wheel-drive car with winter tires. In Stowe, the free Mountain Road Shuttle links the village and the ski resort in winter.

Tips for your crew

  • Route 108 through Smugglers' Notch closes in winter, so don't let a GPS route you over it between Stowe and the other side of the mountain.
  • Book Woodstock for Wassail Weekend and Stowe for Christmas week months ahead; both fill early.
  • Mount Washington has some of the worst weather in the US; check the Mount Washington Observatory forecast before any time up high.
