The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Taipei, Jiufen & Taroko.

Begin in Taipei with the National Palace Museum, Longshan Temple and dinner at Raohe or Shilin night markets, then hike Elephant Mountain for the skyline. Day-trip to the gold-mining hill town of Jiufen and the lanterns of Shifen. Take the train down the east coast to Hualien for Qingshui Cliffs, Qixingtan Beach and the open parts of Taroko Gorge. Finish on the west coast in Tainan, Taiwan's oldest city, among temples, Anping Old Fort and the island's best snack food.

Good for Food lovers who also want mountain scenery and easy train travel.

When to go

October to December and March to May are mild and drier. Summer is hot with typhoon risk, and the northeast coast is drizzly in winter.

Getting around

TRA express trains run Taipei to Hualien in about 2 to 2.5 hours; book seats ahead on weekends. From Hualien, continue by train around the south or return to Taipei and take the High Speed Rail to Tainan in under 2 hours. Taipei's MRT and buses cover Jiufen and Shifen.

Tips for your crew

  • Much of Taroko Gorge has stayed closed since the 2024 earthquake; check the Taroko National Park site for open trails and Highway 8 access windows before going.
  • An EasyCard pays for the MRT, buses, trains and convenience stores.
  • Many night market stalls are cash only, so carry small bills.
