When to go
April through October covers the growing season, from green hillsides in spring through warm summer days and the busy harvest in early fall. Harvest is lively but crowded. Spring is quieter with cooler days. Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in some years, so check conditions before you go.

A car is typical for reaching wineries, but groups should plan a designated driver, hired driver or tour service for tasting days. The towns themselves are easy to walk. Many travelers fly into San Francisco or Oakland and drive north.
