The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Santa Fe & Albuquerque.

Spend three nights in Santa Fe, where adobe rooflines and garden walls are lined with paper-bag farolitos through the holidays. On Christmas Eve, join the crowds walking Canyon Road between small bonfires, carolers and gallery doorways lit with candles. Fill the days with the Plaza, Loretto Chapel, a morning on the slopes at Ski Santa Fe and a soak at Ten Thousand Waves. Then drive an hour south to Albuquerque for Old Town's luminarias, the River of Lights at the BioPark and the tram ride up the Sandia Mountains. With an extra day, Taos and its ski valley are about 90 minutes north of Santa Fe.

Good for Couples and families who want a sunny, food-focused Christmas with candlelit streets, adobe churches and an optional ski day.

When to go

Farolitos go up across Santa Fe from mid-December, and the Canyon Road Farolito Walk happens on the evening of December 24. Albuquerque's River of Lights runs from late November to the end of December, and Old Town is lined with luminarias on Christmas Eve. Days are often sunny at 5-10 C, but nights drop well below freezing and snow falls a few times each winter, especially in Santa Fe at 2,100 m.

Getting around

Fly into Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) and rent a car; Santa Fe is about an hour north on I-25, or take the New Mexico Rail Runner train. Downtown Santa Fe, the Plaza and Canyon Road are walkable, while Ski Santa Fe and Ten Thousand Waves are up Hyde Park Road. In Albuquerque, Old Town, the BioPark and the museums sit close together; the tram base is 25 minutes northeast.

Tips for your crew

  • Canyon Road is closed to cars on Christmas Eve; park downtown or take the shuttle and walk up after dusk.
  • Order your enchiladas "Christmas" to get both red and green chile.
  • Swap the order if you want Albuquerque's Christmas Eve luminaria tour; the bus tours sell out early.
