Eight days that trade the buzz of big medinas for the stillness of the desert. Marrakech starts with the evening theater of Jemaa el-Fnaa, the tilework courtyards of Bahia Palace and the cobalt walls of Majorelle Garden. Fes brings a deeper, older maze in Fes el-Bali, with its tanneries and the exterior of Al-Qarawiyyin. Merzouga finishes the route with sunset on the Erg Chebbi dunes, by camel or 4x4.
Good for Curious travelers who want markets, history and desert sunsets
March through May is the comfortable stretch, with warm days, cooler nights and green country between cities. Summer heat can be intense, especially toward the desert, and winter nights in Merzouga turn cold. Spring is also a good time to catch the gardens at their best.
Many travelers hire a driver or join a small tour for the long road legs, with trains and buses as alternatives between the larger cities. Inside the medinas you walk. The trip to Merzouga takes real time, so plan for it.
