The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Loire Valley Châteaux.

The middle Loire packs royal châteaux, cave wineries and riverside towns into a short distance. Base in Tours to reach the gardens of Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau and the Vouvray cellars. Amboise has its royal château and Leonardo da Vinci's last home at Clos Lucé, with Chenonceau and Chaumont a short drive or ride away. Downriver, Saumur adds the Cadre Noir riding school, sparkling-wine caves and the royal tombs of Fontevraud Abbey.

Good for Couples and families who like castles, gardens, wine and gentle cycling.

When to go

May through September is best, when gardens are full and the Loire à Vélo trail is pleasant. Spring and early autumn are quieter; some smaller sites cut hours in winter.

Getting around

TGVs reach Tours (Saint-Pierre-des-Corps) from Paris in about 1 hour. Regional trains link Tours with Amboise, Chenonceaux and Saumur, but a car or bike makes château-hopping easier.

Tips for your crew

  • Buy Chenonceau tickets online and arrive at opening or after 4 pm to avoid groups.
  • Many cave wineries stay at 12–14°C, so carry a layer.
  • Rent bikes in Tours or Amboise and follow the signed Loire à Vélo route between towns.
