The moments that shape this trip.

Planning South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City & Truckee.

Start in South Lake Tahoe, where the Heavenly Gondola climbs from the edge of town to runs on both sides of the California–Nevada line, with the lake below almost every turn. Drive the west shore past Emerald Bay and Fannette Island to Tahoe City, the base for Palisades Tahoe, the 1960 Winter Olympics resort, and for snowshoeing at Sugar Pine Point. Finish in Truckee, an old railroad town on I-80, with Donner Lake, the Donner Memorial State Park museum and three more ski areas within half an hour: Northstar, Sugar Bowl and the Royal Gorge cross-country trails.

Good for Skiers, families and couples who want big Sierra snow, a famous lake and an easy drive from Reno.

When to go

Heavenly, Palisades Tahoe and Northstar usually open around Thanksgiving, but coverage depends on early storms; the deepest and most reliable snow is from January through March. Sierra storms can drop several feet in a day, followed by clear, sunny days with blue water on the lake, which does not freeze. Christmas week and the days around New Year's Eve are the busiest of the season, with the heaviest traffic on I-80 and US-50.

Getting around

Fly into Reno-Tahoe (RNO). Reno to South Lake Tahoe is about 1 hour 15 minutes via US-395 and US-50; South Lake Tahoe to Tahoe City is about 1 hour on CA-89 along the west shore; Tahoe City to Truckee is 25 minutes on CA-89; and Truckee back to Reno is 35 minutes on I-80. CA-89 at Emerald Bay closes during and after big storms, so check Caltrans QuickMap and use the Nevada shore (US-50 and NV-28) if it is shut. Rent an all-wheel-drive car with snow tires and carry chains: chain controls are common on I-80 over Donner Summit and US-50 over Echo Summit. Amtrak's California Zephyr stops in Truckee daily from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Tips for your crew

  • Ski weekdays if you can: Saturday-morning traffic from the Bay Area backs up on I-80 and parking lots at the big resorts fill early.
  • Palisades Tahoe and Northstar are on different passes (Ikon and Epic); Heavenly is on Epic, so pick a pass that covers the mountains you want.
  • After a storm, wait for chain controls to lift and the plows to pass before driving; the roads clear quickly and the skiing is better a day later anyway.
