Trip guide
Iowa surprises people on this route, mostly by being hilly. It opens in Des Moines, with East Village storefronts and the open-air sculpture of Western Gateway. Decorah follows in the northeast, a small town with Nordic roots, the Trout Run Trail and an easy afternoon along Water Street. The route ends in Dubuque, where trails at Mines of Spain look over the Mississippi from wooded bluffs, a calm finish after the prairie.
Good for Slow travelers who like small towns and river views
May through October brings green bluffs, open trails and comfortable river-town days. Late spring is leafy and lush, while early fall offers color along the limestone ridges. Summer can be humid, and winter limits trail time, so the shoulder seasons feel best for walking.
A car is the practical way to cover the distances between Des Moines, Decorah and Dubuque, with farmland and winding roads along the way. Each town is small enough to explore on foot once you have arrived.
