Planning Würzburg, Bamberg & Nuremberg.

Three Franconian cities an hour apart by regional train, each with its own market. Begin in Würzburg with the market around the Marienkapelle, the Tiepolo frescoes of the Residenz, and a glass of Silvaner on the Alte Mainbrücke below Marienberg Fortress. Move on to Bamberg, a UNESCO-listed old town where the Altes Rathaus sits on an island in the Regnitz, the market fills Maximiliansplatz, and the Schlenkerla tavern pours smoked beer straight from the barrel. Finish in Nuremberg at the Christkindlesmarkt on the Hauptmarkt, with Rostbratwurst, Lebkuchen and the Kaiserburg above the old town.

Good for Travelers who want classic German Christmas markets, beer and wine without a car.

When to go

Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt opens on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent, when the Christkind reads the prologue from the Frauenkirche balcony, and runs to December 24. Würzburg's and Bamberg's markets open in the last week of November and close around December 23. Bamberg's Krippenweg, a trail of nativity scenes through the town's churches and squares, runs from late November to January 6. Snow is possible but not reliable; expect around 0–4 °C.

Getting around

Fly into Frankfurt and take the ICE to Würzburg (about 1.5 hours from the airport), or fly into Nuremberg, whose airport is 12 minutes from the main station by U-Bahn, and do the loop in reverse. Würzburg to Bamberg is about an hour by regional train, and Bamberg to Nuremberg 40 minutes to an hour. A Bayern-Ticket covers a day of regional trains for one to five people, and all three old towns are walkable from their stations.

Tips for your crew

  • Weekday mornings are the quiet time at the Christkindlesmarkt; Friday and Saturday evenings are packed shoulder to shoulder.
  • Order 'drei im Weggla' at a Nuremberg stall: three small grilled Rostbratwürste in a roll.
  • On Würzburg's Alte Mainbrücke, buy a glass of wine at the bridge stands and drink it by the statues; you pay a deposit on the glass.
