Planning Egypt: Pyramids & the Nile.

This route follows the Nile from Cairo to Aswan through 5,000 years of history. In Giza, see the Pyramids and Sphinx, then the Grand Egyptian Museum with Tutankhamun's full collection, and walk Islamic Cairo to Khan el-Khalili. In Luxor, Karnak and Luxor Temple fill the east bank, while the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple sit on the west. Aswan brings felucca sails, Philae Temple, Nubian villages and the crocodile-god temple at Kom Ombo.

Good for History lovers who want ancient sites paired with river time.

When to go

October to April is the comfortable season, with mild days and cool nights. December and January are busiest. From May to September, Luxor and Aswan often top 40°C, so sightseeing shifts to early morning.

Getting around

Fly Cairo to Luxor or Aswan in about an hour, or take the overnight sleeper train. Between Luxor and Aswan, a three- or four-night Nile cruise or a dahabiya stops at Edfu and Kom Ombo. Use Uber or Careem in Cairo.

Tips for your crew

  • Buy official site tickets with a card at the gate or online; many sites no longer take cash.
  • Carry small notes for baksheesh to guards, drivers and restroom attendants.
  • The Luxor Pass gives unlimited access to most Luxor sites and pays off over several days.
