The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Cologne, Koblenz & Rüdesheim.

Follow the Rhine upstream by train from Cologne to the Rheingau. In Cologne, the market under the cathedral's twin spires, the Heinzelmännchen market and ice rink in the old town, and the angels' market on Neumarkt fill two days, with Kölsch at Früh am Dom in between. Koblenz, an hour south, spreads its market over the old-town squares between the Deutsches Eck and the Liebfrauenkirche, with Ehrenbreitstein Fortress across the river. End in Rüdesheim, where the Weihnachtsmarkt der Nationen fills the lanes around the Drosselgasse and the Niederwald monument looks down over Riesling vineyards.

Good for Travelers who want big-city markets and small wine towns linked by a scenic river railway.

When to go

Cologne's markets open in mid to late November and close on December 23; the cathedral market and Heinzels Wintermärchen usually start the week before the first Sunday of Advent. Koblenz's market runs from late November to just before Christmas, and Rüdesheim's Weihnachtsmarkt der Nationen opens around November 20 and stays daily until December 23. The Rhine valley is mild and often grey, rarely snowy; expect 2–6 °C. Weekdays avoid the coach crowds in Rüdesheim.

Getting around

Fly into Cologne Bonn (15 minutes by S-Bahn to Köln Hbf, which sits next to the cathedral) and out of Frankfurt, which is about an hour by train from Rüdesheim. Cologne to Koblenz is 1 to 1.5 hours by regional or IC train along the river, and Koblenz to Rüdesheim about an hour on the right-bank line past the Loreley. Every stop on this route is walkable from its station, so a car is unnecessary.

Tips for your crew

  • Sit on the river side of the train between Koblenz and Rüdesheim for castles on the cliffs the whole way.
  • In Cologne brewhouses the waiter keeps bringing 0.2-litre Kölsch until you lay your beer mat over the glass.
  • Order a Rüdesheimer Kaffee in Rüdesheim: coffee flamed with Asbach brandy and topped with cream.
