The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Hallstatt, Salzburg & Vienna.

Start with two quiet nights in Hallstatt, the salt-mining village on its lake below the Dachstein, with the funicular up to the Welterbeblick platform and the salt mine, and a cable-car day on the Krippenstein. Move on to Salzburg for the Christkindlmarkt between the cathedral and the Residenz, the Advent market in the courtyard of Hellbrunn Palace, and coffee at Café Tomaselli. Finish in Vienna with the market and ice rink at the Rathaus, the Christmas village in front of Schönbrunn, and the chandelier lights on the Graben. Time it for December 31 and the Silvesterpfad turns the old town into one long street party, with the Pummerin bell of St. Stephen's ringing in the year.

Good for Couples and families who want snow, Christmas markets and a big-city New Year's Eve in one trip by train.

When to go

Vienna's Rathausplatz market runs from mid-November to December 26, and Schönbrunn's from late November to December 26, when it reopens as a New Year market until early January. Salzburg's Christkindlmarkt opens around November 20 and usually stays up until January 1; Hellbrunn's Adventzauber runs from late November to December 24. The Silvesterpfad runs through Vienna's old town from the afternoon of December 31. Hallstatt sits at 511 m, so snow in the village is common from December to February but not guaranteed; it is reliable up on the Krippenstein.

Getting around

Fly into Salzburg and take bus 150 to Bad Ischl and a connecting bus to Hallstatt (about 2 hours), or come by train to Hallstatt station on the far shore, where the Stefanie ferry meets trains to cross to the village. Salzburg to Vienna is 2.5 hours on the ÖBB Railjet, and Hallstatt to Vienna about 4 hours with a change at Attnang-Puchheim. Hallstatt's center is car-free; drivers use the car parks by the tunnel. Fly home from Vienna.

Tips for your crew

  • Stay overnight in Hallstatt: day-trip coaches leave by late afternoon and the village is quiet again by evening.
  • Vienna market mugs carry a deposit of a few euros, and each market has its own design.
  • The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert tickets go by lottery a year ahead; the Silvesterpfad and the Pummerin at midnight are free.
