The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Colmar, Kaysersberg & Strasbourg.

Start in Colmar, where six small markets fill the old town and Petite Venise is lit along the Lauch canal each evening. Drive or bus 12 km into the vineyards for Kaysersberg's craft market beside the Holy Cross church, the castle climb above town, and a short hop to walled Riquewihr and its Dolder gate. Finish in Strasbourg, which has run its Christkindelsmärik since 1570: the main market on Place Broglie, the 30-metre tree on Place Kléber, stalls at the foot of the cathedral, and winstubs in the lanes around Maison Kammerzell. Five days covers it at an easy pace, with wine tastings at Hugel and Domaine Weinbach in between.

Good for Couples and families who want the classic Christmas-market circuit with good food and wine, all within an hour of each other.

When to go

Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik runs from late November (around the 22nd–26th) to December 24. Colmar's markets open around November 20 and stay up until about December 29, with the old-town illuminations on every evening. Kaysersberg's market traditionally opens Friday to Sunday from late November to the weekend before Christmas, and Riquewihr's runs daily until about December 23; check each town's dates for the year. Snow is occasional rather than reliable; expect 0–5 °C and darkness by 5 pm. Weekdays in early December are the calmest.

Getting around

Fly into EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (about 45 minutes by car to Colmar), or take the TGV from Paris to Colmar (under 2.5 hours) or Strasbourg (under 2 hours). Kaysersberg is 12 km from Colmar by car or regional bus, and Riquewihr is a 10-minute drive from Kaysersberg; village car parks fill by late morning on Advent weekends. TER trains between Colmar and Strasbourg take about 30 minutes, and Strasbourg's old town is best reached by tram since it is closed to cars during the market.

Tips for your crew

  • Strasbourg's Grande Ile has bag checks at the bridges during the market; carry a small bag and enter on foot or by tram.
  • Market mugs for vin chaud carry a deposit of a few euros; keep one from each town as a souvenir or hand it back.
  • Book Colmar and Strasbourg hotels by late summer; Saturdays in December sell out and prices roughly double.
