Plan three days: Higashiyama temples, Arashiyama at dawn, and Fushimi Inari before the crowds.

Thousands of vermilion torii gates climbing Mount Inari behind the main shrine.

Sake brewer's museum in Fushimi's old brewing district, with a tasting at the end.

Covered five-block food market for pickles, tamagoyaki, tofu and knives.

Canal-side walk lined with cherry trees between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji.

Hillside temple with a wooden stage over the trees and views across the city.

Gion's main lane of wooden teahouses where geiko and maiko are sometimes seen at dusk.
Give it at least three days: old Asakusa, Shibuya-Harajuku, Shinjuku nights and a bay-side art morning.
