The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Sri Lanka: Rock Forts to the South Coast.

This loop runs from Sri Lanka's ancient north-central plains through the tea hills to the southern coast. Climb Sigiriya rock fortress and see the cave paintings of Dambulla, then head to Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya. Ride the high-country train from Nanu Oya to Ella for tea estates, Nine Arch Bridge and hikes up Little Adam's Peak. Finish in the walled Dutch town of Galle with beaches at Unawatuna nearby.

Good for Travelers who want ancient sites, a famous train ride and beach time in one trip.

When to go

December to April is driest in the hills and on the south and west coasts. The southwest monsoon brings rain to Galle and the hills from May to September, while the east coast is dry then.

Getting around

Most travelers hire a car with driver between stops. After Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025, trains between Kandy and Nanu Oya were still suspended in October 2026, so drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) and take the scenic train from there to Ella. Tuk-tuks cover short trips.

Tips for your crew

  • Check Sri Lanka Railways for the latest hill-country line status, as repairs to the Kandy section are ongoing, and reserve seats about 30 days ahead.
  • Dress with shoulders and knees covered and remove shoes and hats at temples.
  • Buy the Sigiriya ticket at the gate and climb at opening to avoid heat and crowds.
