The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Cape Town, Winelands & Garden Route.

Start in Cape Town with the cableway up Table Mountain, the ferry to Robben Island and the penguins at Boulders Beach. Drive 45 minutes east to Stellenbosch for oak-lined Dorp Street and estates like Delaire Graff, then ride the Franschhoek Wine Tram between cellars. Lunch in the gardens at Babylonstoren before the long drive along the N2. On the Garden Route, base in Knysna for the lagoon and the Heads, and loop to Plettenberg Bay for the Robberg Peninsula hike and Monkeyland.

Good for Couples and food lovers who want city, wine and coast in one self-drive trip.

When to go

October to April brings warm, dry weather in Cape Town and the Winelands; February and March are harvest season. Winter (June to August) is wet in Cape Town but quiet, green and good for whale watching along the coast.

Getting around

Rent a car in Cape Town; the Winelands are 45 to 60 minutes away and Knysna is about 6 hours on the N2. Use Uber within Cape Town and a wine-tour driver or the Wine Tram so nobody has to drive between tastings.

Tips for your crew

  • Book the Table Mountain cableway and Robben Island ferry online, and keep a flexible day because wind often shuts both.
  • Do not leave valuables visible in a parked car, and avoid driving rural roads after dark.
  • Many wine estates close tastings by 5pm and some close Mondays, so plan lunches around them.
