The moments that shape this trip.

Planning Berlin, Potsdam & Dresden.

A compact trip through eastern Germany that pairs Berlin's 20th-century history with the royal palaces of Prussia and Saxony. In Berlin, see the Reichstag dome, the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße and the East Side Gallery. A short S-Bahn ride brings you to Potsdam's Sanssouci Palace and Cecilienhof, where the 1945 Potsdam Conference took place. Finish in Dresden, rebuilt around the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger and the Green Vault, with a day out to the sandstone Bastei in Saxon Switzerland.

Good for Travelers wanting a long weekend of history and architecture without flights.

When to go

May through September brings long days, open beer gardens and palace gardens in full form. December is cold but Dresden's Striezelmarkt is among Germany's oldest Christmas markets.

Getting around

Potsdam is 25–40 minutes from central Berlin on the S7 or regional trains. Berlin to Dresden takes about 2 hours by direct train, and the S1 runs from Dresden to Kurort Rathen for the Bastei.

Tips for your crew

  • Reichstag dome visits are free but need advance online registration.
  • The Sanssouci+ ticket covers most Potsdam palaces in one day; Sanssouci itself has timed entry.
  • Dresden's Historic Green Vault has timed tickets that sell out; book a few days ahead.
